THE
ABYSSINIAN
'In
1868 a male cat called Zulu was bought to Britain by some
soldiers returning from the war in Abyssinia - known today as
Ethiopia. Zulu was used to start a breeding program and in 1882
the breed was recognized in Britain. Although they are now
available in many colours including blue, fawn and silver, their
original brown and light copper colouring was similar to the
colour of a wild hare or rabbit which resulted in them being
called names like Hare Cat, Rabbit Cat and Bunny Cat. Although
no one knows exactly where the breed originally comes from it is
thought that they could be descendants of the sacred cats of
Egypt as they look like the cats depicted on tomb paintings
found in Ancient Egypt.'
