THE BIRMAN

'Birman are considered to be sacred cats and there are several ancient legends describing the origin of those beautiful creatures. One describes an attack on an ancient Burmese temple where the high priest was injured. The temple cats sensed that he was dying and as he died his favourite cat jumped onto him and was transformed into a Birman. When the cat's paws touched the priest's body, the fur remained white, symbolising goodness. It is thought that each time a Birman cat dies, the soul of a priest accompanies it to heaven.'
