CATS AND SLEEP

'Cats sleep much longer than other mammals, usually for sixteen hours a day or even longer in hot countries. Most sleeping is done during the day so they are awake in the early morning and late evening, when its cooler and hunting is more productive. Rather than having long deep sleeps they prefer cat-naps ... a drowsy light sleep, usually with one eye slightly open, from which they are easily roused. After about thirty minutes, they enter six minutes of deep dream sleep then return to drowsing. This is followed by a waking ritual of yawning, stretching and washing, to exercise their muscles, revive circulation, and restore body scent. Cats usually sleep in the best chair in the house or on a bed because they recognise the smell and feel safe, but if a cat starts to sleep on your bed, it will expect to sleep there for the rest of its life!'
