'One of the oldest Spaniel breeds, the dog's original name of Cocking Spaniel derived from it being used to flush woodcocks from cover in woods and marshes. Soon after the Kennel Club formed in 1873 Cocker Spaniels were recognized as a separate breed from Springers and Field Spaniels. Cockers used for work are less sturdy and less heavy than their counterparts seen in the show ring. This is the most popular of the spaniel breeds.'
